Free Online Classes from Stanford University School of Engineering

Stanford Artificial IntelligenceStanford University’s School of Engineering is offering three cool online courses this fall:

You can enroll for free. All classes start on October 10th and finish in December 2011. Contrary to a learning through simply watching video courses available, you will be asked to do homework and pass mid-term and final exams — so this is going to be interactive. At the end you will be able to receive a statement of accomplishment from the instructor (i.e. an document to describe how well you did and how your performance compared to other online students)—so this is not a Stanford certificate or grade unfortunately.

As for the courses content:

Machine learning is taught by Professor Andrew Ng. The course is about the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed. In the past decade, machine learning has given us self-driving cars, practical speech recognition, effective web search, and a vastly improved understanding of the human genome.

Where is new leaked build of Windows 8?

I’m waiting for a new leaked build of Windows 8 to try. The latest build available is 7989, but that is kind of old. I would go for a pre-beta release 8xxx or something. I used to check mydigitallife.info for that sort of information but the guys stopped updating their website except for the forum.

Build 8064 is currently under discussion, thanks to Canouna mighty connections. That name and also Zucona (Wzor, known for major leaks from Microsoft and others) are two big reference sources. Wzor has evidently a Russian origin, Canouna (“MDL OS Testing Specialist”) does not sound like a native English-speaking guy (or a lady?), probably from France or China. Whoever they are, the information (and sometimes software) we receive from them is invaluable.

Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 licence reset

cs5.5-30daysSomeone might think it was an attempt to fight unlicensed use of Creative Suite 5.5, when few days ago Adobe had reset licences of pirated copies of its software — Photoshop, Dreamveawer and others. So users may see the dialog screen with the message: “The serial number you used to activate this product has expired. This is your last opportunity to launch the product before it is automatically deactivated. To reactivate, you must provide a new serial number or start a trial on next launch.” Here’s the screenshot below:

adobe cs5.5 reset adobe trial cs5.5

How come people were using that software illegally you may ask? Well, although Adobe has used a seemingly sophisticated activation method, in reality it is sort of bluff, and I fail to understand its reason. Because the workaround is plain silly: get the trial, shortcut some web addresses like “activate.adobe.com” thru the host file to have instant domain name resolution, and finally use a generated serial number. You are done. I don’t support piracy, but I’m explaining this to show: this should not be that simple! I mean, common Adobe, you have enough resources to make this a serious barrier. Now it is one big hole. Continue reading

Letters from China

Chinese signWe don’t write paper letters anymore. Whether we want or not, electronic instant communication is replacing that fragile media, but it is like instant coffee — rarely have the full flavor. I got a book in a shop and between the pages I found that piece of paper, please see the scanned picture. The book was printed in China, so I guess it is where this sign is coming from. Well I understand that it is most probably meant a sort of “QA check by Yung Wu”, but still I’m pleased to keep it. It is like in Salinger’s “Raise High The Roof Beam, Carpenters!”:

My last guest had evedently let himself out of the apartment. Only his empty glass, and his cigar end in the pewter ashtray, indicated that he had ever existed. I still rather think his cigar end should have been forwarded on to Seymour, the usual run of wedding gifts being what it is. Just the cigar, in a small, nice box. Possibly with a blank sheet of paper enclosed, by way of explanation.

Make Your Life Richer with Escentric Molecules

Countless hours spent at computer may turn you off the real encounters, meeting real people. Social life is difficult to hack, yet some may try to simulate. The simulation brings you back to the computers, and that is a trap. So let’s try to facilitate the way you could approach the other individuals or attract them like a magic magnet, and I would like to talk about fragrance. I’m not going to highlight the importance of taking the shower twice a day or that aphrodisiacs tricky stuff. Nothing like that.

I experienced few years ago a scent under name Escentric Molecules, and that perfume struck me deep. I’m obsessed with good scents in general, but that was very special. The brand was very much a niche article with limited distribution. Now I’ve noticed that the product line was extended and in my country it is becoming much more available (yet not that much affordable).

Escentric Molecules

So what is the buzz? The first scent named Molecule 01 contains only one (!) ingredient “ISO E Super” which is a trade mark of one very long (both name and molecule structure) artificial chemical 7-acetyl, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-1,1,6,7-tetramethyl naphthalene, well-known in the fragrance industry. Molecule 01 was introduced by a German perfume designer Geza Schoen.

Let me quote their website www.escentric.com: It’s just a clinical dose of a single aroma-chemical with a name as long as some distant galaxy’s. It comes in a menacing bottle with strange light effects. The aroma molecule is so complex, the body can only metabolize it very slowly so it appears to vanish, then re-appears hours later, hovering like a stealth bomber over your skin.

To support my point about socializing: ISO E Super has a pheromonic effect (pheromone — secreted or excreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species). I think you got the point.

US 2012 Diversity Visa Lottery Bug

usagov_logoIf you have never heard about USA 2012 Electronic Diversity Lottery program, then you most probably you already live in the United States of America. This lottery takes place every year and everybody whose country is considered eligible can participate and try his or her luck to win so-called Green card. Now, look what happened. Results of 2012 Green Card lottery became available as of May 2011 thru checking the official website http://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ with entrants unique confirmation numbers. Theoretically most of 22’000 people selected in the results could realize how amazingly lucky they were, yet two weeks later disaster hit: the lottery results have been voided due to programming error!

Here’s the official explanation: “A computer programming error resulted in a selection that was not truly random. Since the computer programming error caused an outcome that was not random, the outcome did not meet the requirements of the law, and would have been unfair to many DV entrants.” Yet the 2012 program is not cancelled, which is a great news, and those who already applied will be able to check new lottery results as of July 15 2011.

The US officials refuse the idea that Department of State could be hacked and the entrants personal information is in danger, saying that they have “no evidence that this problem was caused by any intentional act. No unauthorized party accessed data related to the DV program.”

Windows 8 M2 build 7955 with Magic Blue Pill

w8-7955-leakDefault green desktop saying “Shhh… let’s not leak our hard work” is supposed to be very ironical I guess, as everybody can download and try “Microsoft confidential” new pre-release of Windows 8 internal build 7955. Just don’t tell me Microsoft is not supporting this “leak”. (You can find all the links and latest information on mydigitallife.info and its forums.) Let’s have a look what is inside.

A software called NoPillXerax has been offered (“Blue pill” is also available) to activate and unlock the hidden features of Windows 8 (version 1.5 up to now): Continue reading
